Editing Tags Is Not Permanent

    I have a situation whereby a tag has been added to a post and saved. This tag has a spelling mistake, so I go back and edit it, but after saving it it reverts to the incorrect version.

    Next I try deleting the tag from the post and saving, then adding a new correctly spelled tag. Still it reverts.

    I even went into the database via phpmyadmin and removed the incorrect version and references to it from the tables ‘wp_terms’, ‘wp_term_relationships’, and ‘wp_term_taxonomy’. This was the only successful way of changing the tag to the one I want, but as soon as another edit it made to the post – any edit, not just on the tag – the tag reverts to the original one that is incorrect.

    I’ve tried using the Advanced Tag Entry plugin but the tag still reverts to the wrong one after an edit.

    Is this a bug or am I doing something incredibly stupid?

    He Andrew, don’t worry, it’s not you! You need the Simple Tags plugin until this is built into WP.

    That’s a nice plugin, but no, that doesn’t work either.

    I can use it to delete the wrong tag, and add the correct tag to the post, but as soon as I make any other edit to the post a new copy of the incorrect tag is automatically created and replaces the correct one.

    You CAN edit it. In your dashboard you get an extra option “tags”. Just click on the tag you want to change on the left side of the screen (indeed, it doesn’t look clickable but it is), it will become visible on the right where it says “tag(s) to rename” and a line below you can type the new tag name.

    You’re not understanding the problem.

    Using that plugin, I deleted the incorrect tag (tag ID ‘2’, named ‘deadline’) and added the correct tag (tag ID ‘1’, named ‘Deadlines’)to the post. At this stage my list of tags only includes the correct one (tag ID ‘1’, ‘Deadlines’). Now, I go back into the post itself and edit it – that is edit the main body of the post not the tags – and save it. The tag now attached to the post is a fresh copy of the incorrect one – ‘deadline’, but now with the ID ‘3’.

    Right, since I installed the plugin, all problems were solved. I suppose you deleted the plugin to delete the tag (you had better changed it to the correct spelling) and used the post to create a new tag? How many tags do you have in the tag management?
    If WP adds a tag without you even touching anything, there’s something fishy going on that I can’t help you with. What if you use the plugin to delete all tags, de-activate the plugin and (either with or without creating a new tag) do your thing…? If that doesn’t help, I’m afraid I’m no longer your man…
    And I’m offline in a second too.
