Editing Stylesheet question

  • I am re-entering the world of WordPress and have an ultra novice question regarding style.sheet editing. I noticed all of the available folders under the virtue theme, like footer, front page etc. If I am making edits to the website, do I need to copy all of these folders and bring them into my child theme to edit to ensure nothing is lost during updates. Or can I somehow reference which folder applies and place the CSS code in the style.sheet like I used too. When I write “used to”, it was with WordPress twenty twelve, which was seemingly very easy to use.

More succinct. Import all folders intending to change code in to child-theme, or reference the respective folder (i.e header) using a specific designation in eternally important child-theme style.sheet.

I like this theme, thank you for sharing it, and if you can share your thoughts on my inquiry, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Best Wishes,

Hey, It all depends on what you are wanting to do. If you want to change the style, a style sheet will work fine, if you want to change how the code works or lays content out use a child theme.

Can you give me an idea of what you want to do?

    Hope that helps.

    Hi,

Thank you kindly for responding. I am aiming at the front page (home) being slightly more interactive with call to action buttons and a log-in for specific persons. I’m fine with learning css in greater depth and coding this up, but that must mean that my edits take place in every folder I wish to change the lay-out in, right? If I desired to ad a form on the front page, over a portion of the existing flex slider, would this be possible?

    Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you need to work with php as your are wanting to add to the front page not style it differently. You need to copy whatever files you want from the theme and put them in a child theme, then do you edits.
Adding a form over the slider doesn’t make sense to me but you change whatever with the files.

Thank you for the information. The intent of adding a call-to-action form over a small portion of the slider was to make it visible when the user first enters the page and not have to scroll down below the slider to see it.

You can add text to the slider and make each image a link.. Just FYI
