E_ERROR Message Only When Opening Pages Section In Admin Area

    Hi,

    I’m having a problem with website running Yoast SEO where when trying to access the Pages section in the admin area causes the site to either just produce a white screen or to generate a Critical Error message.

    The email it sends to me states:
    An error of type E_ERROR was caused in line 1975 of the file wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/lib/orm.php. Error message: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 8192 bytes)

    This seems to have occurred since updating to 14.3 and I’ve since updated to 14.4 but the issue is still there. Also I’m running WordPress 5.4.2 and PHP 7.2.31

    The issue doesn’t affect the frontend of the website, or even sections like Posts in the admin area, it is just the Pages section and nothing else.

    Disabling Yoast SEO allows me to open and edit pages as normal, but as soon as it is activated again, the same issue will occur.

    This is on a dedicated server with plenty of available RAM. We also have a staging version of the website and are not seeing this issue with the same version of Yoast and other plugins on staging.

    Can you help?

    I have a similar memory error after updating to 14.4. Have you found a solution?

    I rolled back to 14.3 and re-updated to 14.4.1. This seems to have solved this error i was getting. fyi.

    We are sorry to hear about the error you are getting. Does the issue persist when updating your plugin to Yoast SEO 14.4.1 as what @aorellana has tried?

    Hi jerparx,

    In the end I had to roll back all the way to 14.2 to fix this issue, which obviously isn’t ideal as I know 14.3 and upwards were released to fix other bugs.

    Do you know if this bug can be looked into and placed into the schedule for fixing in a future release please?

    @quicksilver01uk You’re welcome to submit a bug report here if you wish to, but it’s necessary for us to be able to replicate the error in order for it to be investigated and resolved through a bug report.

    Regarding the error, have you tried increasing the site’s memory to see whether it resolves the issue? This setting is typically controlled by editing the values in a php.ini file such as in the following example:

    memory_limit = 256M

    If you aren’t sure how to change these settings in php.ini, we would recommend contacting your hosting provider for additional assistance.

    Hi @devnihil,

    I’ll give this a test and see what the results are.

    It seems strange though that 14.2 of Yoast runs ok, but only the last two versions are seemingly needing memory increases. Do you know the reason for this?

    If you haven’t done so already, you can check to make sure that your site meets the minimum plugin requirements or contact your hosting provider to see if they’re able to troubleshoot the memory problem.

    Hi @priscillamc,

    In the end, increasing the memory limit to 512M fixed this issue and the Yoast plugin is now running on 14.4.1 with no error when access the Pages admin area.

    Do you know why both 14.3 and 14.4.x required such a massive increase in memory limits to be able to run when 14.2 worked ok at 128M? Is there some way to see what additional feature added after 14.2 increased the memory usage to cause this issue?
