I have spent some hours yesterday and today creating a new page, but noticed that the captions and other descriptive fields that I was adding were not included when I later added the photos to the draft page. I had saved the page as draft several times and previewed it on the way.

I then decided to clear the browser tab and start again, but when I reconnected, some of the latest caption updates were no longer there – and the draft page was gone as well, losing my several hours work – and for a while, my temper!

Any suggestions as to whether these updates can be retrieved?

  • I’ve had this happen to me a few times if I’m not paying attention.

WordPress auto-saves for you to some extent if you don’t do it manually and to see the previous revisions there is a line that says “revisions” in a window in the top-right while you’re editing your page. The window is labeled “Publish.” If it’s not there you’re probably out of luck.

Thanks, Hal – so it’s not just picking on me! I’ve reapplied the media updates and could see that they were being saved – they appear to be OK now.

I have just noticed that the “lost” draft is shown on the Dashboard page, but not in the All Pages page – there are only All, Published and Trash categories on the latter. I regard this as a serious design flaw – you should be able to see drafts from that page.

Ignore that – it’s a user error! I had put it in as a Post, instead of a Page. Head, meet wall!

Haha, glad you figured it out 🙂
