Download File Icons

Hello,

I am considering to switch from Pivot to WP, but I still have one feature which I cannot find in WordPress and the forum.

WP will also be used for the exchange of documents, so files would be uploaded, which works fine. But the I would like to have an icon (cfr. Word or pdf icon) instead of text as the linking text.
Of course this can be done by using a image in between de and tags, but this is not very user friendly towards some users.

Can this be done in an automatical way, using a plugin which I did not notice?
