    not able to find what version I presently have

    try looking here:
    /wp-includes/version.php

    With every attempt to update this error message along with Downloading update

    Try MANUALLY updating.

    But, first please tell me your current WP version.

    Also, talk to your host about this error. They may be blocking somethings as part of security.
