“Down for maintenance”-function. Does it exist?

    I just started using WordPress, and I’m currently working on making my own theme for my first WordPress site. In the previous CMS I was using for my websites (e107) there was this function for closing down the entire site, and while this was active any user who tried to acces the website (other than admins) was redirected to a page explaining that the site was down for maintenance (or any other reason).

    This is a really nice and useful function, and I’m hoping something similar exists in WordPress. So the question is, does it?
