Dont lose coded work after update plugin

Hello all,

I am currently creating a wordpress site for the first time, but I have some experience with html / css / php coding.

Now I’m building a website and changing some plugins, but when I update the plugin, there’s a chance that I’ll lose my coded work. I would like to keep them updated for security, but does anyone have a tool or idea how to prevent losing my coded work?
