domain registration and hosting

    i have a domain registered with hostgator, and i also have a hosting plan with the same company but i don’t like the performance, so my question is can i keep the registration with host gator and have the hosting with IPage, which i think is a lot better, or do i need to transfer the domain registration also to Ipage (which i am afraid to do, because i am afraid to lose the domain if anything goes wrong)?
