• Hello,

We plan to launch a website where the main feature will be a live stream powered my Dailymotion, that we embed into a iframe on our site. So we dont care about the stream itself, encoding, stuff like that. But during live events stream, we plan to receive at least 20k users at the same time, looking at the stream on our site.
We plan to host this website on a dedicated server.
Our main concern right now is to know if WordPress fits for such a project ?
I read a lot about wordpress scalability, stuff like this, but our project is not about dealing high amount of users during a large period of time, but dealing with HUGE amount of users, during a short period of time.
Is WordPress a good choice to deal with this problem ?

  • Of course wordpress can handle it but according to your huge traffic, you need to have a very powerful server. Specially CPU and RAM.What are the specifications of your server? I mean CPU and RAM.

Right now, we didn’t buy the server yet. We don’t have any idea about how much CPU and RAM we would need to host such amount of users during live events ? Do you have any idea ?

I am not exactly sure about the specs of server. It depends on many factors. For example it depends on the plugins you want to install on it, the average amount of data each visitor downloads/uploads and etc. But i think you at least need quad or dual quad core CPU with 16 GB of RAM to have a fast website. But as i said before, it depends on many factors.
One thing is interesting for me. how do you know you have 20K online visitors at the same time?

Ok, thank you for your answer, it will give me something to start with when we will order the server. It’s funny, someone else asked me the same question about how we figured about hosting 20k users, on an other forum 🙂

We studied the stats from our competition (easy to do, live users are shown in the stream player) and the size of the community we are focusing.

OK, please consult with the server provider too before purchasing it. Of course all hosting providers know wordpress and they have more information about the specs needed for running a wordpress website according to the traffic of it.

I’ll totally do that. I wanted some extra info from community before : )
Anyway, thank you for your advices.
