I’ve got a similar problem. None of the results are filtered. It just shows the first five posts, no matter what I put in for the category or tag values. It also shows five items even when I specify a different number, and it doesn’t seem to respond to the other settings.
I have the latest version of WordPress (3.9.1) running the Twenty Fourteen theme.

I don’t know if this is the answer to your problems but I had the same issue.
I had copied the shortcode from http://www.webmechanix.com/wordpress-plugins/add-posts-pages/
and then adjusted it to select posts with a particular tab and it didn’t display anything.
I then cleared the formatting using the eraser icon and it seems to work now. I don’t know what the formatting does but it wasn’t handing over the args.

Hi guys, I’m sorry you’re having trouble..

If you send me the following, I might be able to look into it:

    • A link to the page where the shortcode is running
    • Paste the shortcode that’s running on that page

Also, make sure you’re using the slug of the category or tag.. not the name or label.

    Thanks!

Ah ha, there ya go!… Remove the formatting on the shortcode and it should resolve!
