• When I try to update a user’s email address, name, role, etc., using wp-admin, I get the following error:

ERROR Display name publicly as:This display name is already in use. Please choose another one.

To work around this, I have to re-enter any updates I made and change the display name to get the updates to save. Then I can go back and edit again to change the display name back to what it was before.

Core WP doesn’t actually restrict display name reuse, at least when set by an admin. The error you are getting is caused by one of your plugins or maybe even your theme. Identify which one by selectively deactivating plugins or switching themes. Then take up the issue through the dedicated support channel for the responsible module.

The added restriction is common for forum and bulletin board plugins. If you have anything similar, it’s likely the cause.
