Yes, so I want to display a list of upcoming events with the date, title, location, category, and if poss the name of the speaker / author.

You can use a “Text” widget to add the [ecs-list-events cat="your-category"] shortcode into a widget area.
For customizing the template (including adding the speaker/author), you’ll need the pro version:

You can copy an existing design template and add the category/speaker/author names where you’d like.
