Disable sidebar in 1.5 for comments? | WordPress.org

I am running 1.5 classic theme, and the side bar is called in the footer, I changed that so it is no longer called in footer but now is called in the index file. How do I change it so it does not show up in the comments?

Change the following in footer.php

<?php get_sidebar(); ?>

to the one below

<?php if( !is_single() ) { get_sidebar(); } ?>

Thanks that worked, now if I want it off the catagories page/archives? I wonder if I am best just writing it in the index page, would this be better than writing it out of the others, the only reason for wanting this is that it{sidebar} can be quite long and exceed the page for comments/archives et cetera
