Different Types of Archives

I looked at the documentation for the templates and specifically at the section about displaying the archives. It gives all these different strings and values that can be used but the ones involved with the actual display of the archives do not work. Only the default style of displaying the archives as a list works. Is there a fix to the problem because i want to create a drop down archive listing?
