Deleteing Events – Redirects?

Hi
I have around 200 past events which I need to delete and was wondering what others do with regards to this? If I delete and dont do anything I’ll have alot of 404 errors. On some previously I have just set up a 301 redirect to the main calendar but I’m not sure if this is correct as I was told that too many redirects could also be harmful to my site. Someone said I should use 410 but I would like to know how others are handling their expired events on the events calendar.
