Dedicated Home Page w/o posts?

We are using WordPress as a web site, not as a blog per se. I would like to have the first/home page to be a description of our club without any posts showing, other than the links in the side column (we are using the Twenty Eleven Theme). Currently all new posts are going to the front page even if they are only tagged with Events or another of our menu categories. This makes the other categories somewhat redundant as the posts are appearing in both places. On the menu it shows “Home” but in the dashboard “Home” is not listed as a page. I would welcome some insight as to what I’m missing as I’ve been bleary eyed going through the documentation and have purchased two books on WordPress and still can’t find the answer.
