Deactivate plugin but keep attachments possible?

Too bad this plugin appears to be abandoned. The .jpeg problem is a real issue for me and now I am stuck. If I disable the plugin I lose all my attachments. Does anyone know a way to deactivate the plugin but keep the existing attachments?
