@tobiasschulze WordPress is not a company, nor do we provide you with any services or business. We do not host your website, nor do we store any of your data.

WordPress is a piece of software, which is free, and which is available for anybody to use on their own systems. Basically, you store your own data on your own systems. We do not store it for you, nor do we have any access to your private websites.

As we do not host your servers nor hold any of your data, the section of the GDPR you are referring to does not apply. We are not a data controller, nor a data processor.

    Dear mr. Samuel Wood (Otto)

Can you please confirm that WordPress as a company or organisation have no access at all to

1: Data, that I as a user, can reach and configure through the WordPress platform

2: Data accessed through the WordPress platform via plugins used in WordPress

3: Passwords and logs generated for and used to access the WordPress control panel, meaning that no admin, technician or any other person but the owner of the website itself, can access the information, which the user has access to via the WordPress platform?

    1. Here on this site, the data we have is the data that you put into your forum profile. For example, here:

That shows the data we have for you, and you can edit or delete it as you please.

    2. I don’t really know which “data” you’re referring to here. We don’t run your site. We don’t have plugins that report back to us. You may have plugins reporting to other places, that depends on each plugin.

    3. Passwords and other user information are stored in each WordPress site’s own database. Not centrally. We don’t run your site, nor store your data.

I think you might be confused about what WordPress is, because you use terms like “the WordPress platform”. WordPress is software, not a service. Your site is your own. You store your own data on your own host. Here at, we create the software, and we use the software. We provide support systems, and plugin and theme hosting for people who want to download and use free plugins or themes.

But your site and all of its contents lives on your own systems, and on your own hosting services. We don’t have backups of your data, because we just make the software that you are free to use for whatever purpose you see fit.

To put it a simpler way: We’re not Facebook or Twitter. We don’t own or control your content in any way at all. You do. We just make the software that powers your site.

    Hello there!

Is there an official statement for this, Samuel? 🙂 (Searched forums, website +++ but couldn’t find any.)

I don’t think the authorities will accept a reply in a forum, and I’d like to have a copy of text for my GDPR files.
