I tried the plug-in — didn’t work at all for me. I emailed the author but haven’t heard back. I think it’s a major flaw that WP doesn’t allow and easy way to customize these emails/etc.

What version of WP are you using? I have that plugin running on WP 2.2-bleeding (unreleased version), and it’s working just fine!
I even customize mine for MediaWiki, bbPress, and WP.

That plugin is running on my site now..
I’m using 2.1 — there were some very significant issues. I’m trying to manually edit the emails through the pluggable.php files now and while it’s not optimum, it’s working for now. Of course, if I upgrade, God help me remember all the fixes.
