Custom default blog page

I have my wp install set up to use a static home page, i have a page called ‘news’ which has custom header and footer, plus additional custom code i want to set this as my default blog page, however when i set a default blog page it uses home.php which screws up some of the custom header code which uses page id’s to set some values when I set the blog page to be news, if i use the page without the setting the custom header code works but the blog output is different, it does not show all posts
