Hi @officezen,
The crop feature works like this. Suppose you have an image that is 300×320 and you’re uploading it with a thumb size of 150×150:
– If crop to exact dimension is ON, then we will crop the image to exactly 150×150 after resizing one dimension down to 150 to preserve aspect ratio. The final size will be 150×150.
– If crop to exact dimension is OFF, then we will resize the image down to ONE of the dimensions specified for the thumbnail size, and size the OTHER dimension, based on the aspect ratio. So in that case, we will resize the image to 150×160. Final size is 150×160.
Does that make more sense?
I have the Crop to size option OFF and it still generates the thumbnail in cropped dimension.
It eventually post the full size image, but the cropped thumbnail version really confuses users.

Screen 1 shows my thumbnail setting. Max width and height set to 300px.
Screen 2 shows the current front-end thumbnail preview. Still generating the image at 150 width and not 300px.
Hi @officezen,
OK, I think I see the confusion.
If an image already meets the minimum size, then we don’t try to enlarge it because that always causes artifacts in the image (making small images larger turns them into a blurry, pixelated mess–we had this in earlier versions and it caused a great deal of complaints). If it’s larger than the minimum size, we will resize and possibly crop it, depending on the settings. That’s a safer operation.
If you want an image that is already 300px wide, you need to supply one that is that size or larger as the initial image.
Also, if you CHANGE the settings after you have images already uploaded, we don’t retroactively process them to fit the new settings (that can be a performance disaster on sites!). You need to re-upload the image to get the new settings.
Does that make sense?
This whole thumbnail generation is indeed very confusing. Where does this thumbnail version even get displayed in BD?
When I upload an image 250px (w) x 54px (h) for the thumbnail max setting of 250px x 250px, according to your explanation, it should not generate a smaller version (= thumbnail?) to preview at all, correct? However, it is still generating 150px x 54px in the preview.
Is there anyway to not show the thumbnail version and show the full version as preview?
It’s all good now. I had the crop thumbnail image option still on in WP Media settings.
Glad to hear it!
