Critical error

    I have a page which shows a monthly total and yearly running total of the number of records added in a table. It has always been a really slow page to load (~30 seconds), but now trying to edit the page causes a critical error on the site, even in recovery mode. I can’t access it from the dashboard either. There is nothing else on the page. It has 12 shortcodes (as I gradually replace the codes each month with text to try and speed it up).

    The debugging log just shows the 12 queries:

    I haven’t made any changes recently and all the pdb plugins are up to date.

    Any ideas what could be going on?

    When a critical error happens on your WP site, an email is sent to the site admin with the details of the error. This can be helpful in determining how to fix the problem. My guess is that is it a php timeout on the script, there is a limit to the amount of time a script can run, and perhaps these queries are hitting that limit.

    It may be that your best approach to avoiding the problem is to add a new page to the site, then add your shortcodes one by one with the intention of replacing the malfunctioning page with a new page on the site.

    You may find there is a practical limit to the number of such shortcodes you can place on a page, depending on what your web server can handle. Setting up a cache for this page is probably a good idea, but this won’t help the issue of it bogging down when editing the page.

    That was my thought actually. it’s strange that it has only happened now when there have been more shortcodes on there in the past.
