Critical error

Hello, I have a new job and have been given very little information about the website that I will be managing. Noone had updated the site plugins for some time, so I started updating them and am now getting a “critical error” message. It says “There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.”
We suspect that the email may have been sent to a former employee whose email address is no longer active, so we can’t access the instructions for how to get past the white screen.
We have determined that the site is hosted by a company called Digital Ocean, but are unable to find any files associated with this website there (otherwise I would disable the plugin that way).
Is there any workaround for logging in to a WordPress site if you can’t access the files on the server either?
