Hi – I built my site some time ago and created php templates for different sets of pages. I moved the site to Theme Twenty Twenty-Two some time ago and it’s been working fine. I now want to create another group of pages with a different look and so I set out to create another template.

In the Edit / Templates screen I’m directed to the + at the top to create another new template. I do this but it then asks me to link this new template to a specific page only. I carry through with the process.

Back in the Dashboard – the page I linked to still shows up using the Default Template and my new Template is not in the drop-down list of available Templates.
I’ve also tried modifying one of the existing Templates that I don’t currently use – this results in my modifications (mainly colour changes) filtering back to change the Templates that are used.

So – is it possible to create a New Template which will appear in the drop–down list of Templates to choose from. If so, how? If not, how do I get a set of pages looking different from standard pages? Do I need to use a different Theme?

A pointer in the right direction would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Sure. But there are different types of templates that service different purposes. So you need to read the template descriptions carefully, end ensure you’re creating the right kind of template.

To create a template that you can manually assign to any individual POST or PAGE, you need to select CUSTOM TEMPLATE.

Again, carefully read the description for any template type you select to create!

Thanks George, that’s just great. I don’t know how many times I looked at that screen. The Custom Template option wasn’t showing – it was off the screen. Wasted time for a silly mistake but I’m on the way now – thanks again
