Crashing wp-admin/index.php

If we load [site]/wp-admin/index.php the page crashes (in this instance it bounces to the hosting firm’s ‘This domain has just been registered‘ catch-all page).
If I then load the dev frontend URL the admin bar is present for [any] page (login was successful then, loading …wp-admin/index.php was not), hovering site name and clicking ‘Dashboard’ results in the same fail as above, clicking say, ‘Themes’, ‘Widgets’ or ‘Menus’ allows backend access to everything barring ‘Dashboard’.

Tried the following fixes:

Reinstall WordPress [5.9.3]: nope
Delete & reinstate htaccess: nope
Switch off plugins: yes [one by one turning back on highlights WooComm as the issue]
Switch off theme/s: nope

Hi @surferchappie,

This is indeed a bit strange and I could not replicate the issue you’re describing on one of my test sites running with WordPress, WooCommerce and the default Storefront theme.

Can you enable debug logging in WordPress to see if an error will be logged next time this occurs that can give you hints on what may be causing this issue? Follow the steps here for debugging in WordPress:

Reading your comment it seems that you disabled plugins one by one. I recommend disabling all plugins at once and leaving only WooCommerce active. Select all plugins in [your-site]/wp-admin/plugins.php and use Bulk actions > Deactivate > Apply. Then, change the theme to Storefront and see if it makes a difference.

To clarify:
– plugins were disabled en masse, each in turn reactivated and the test cycled (load dashboard), with WooCommerce disabled the test cycled with dashboard loading successfully, with WooCommerce enabled dashboard fails to load.

Hello,

Can you check if your plugins are all up to date especially the ones that fail to load the dashboard?

You can also try clearing transients from WooCommerce > Status > Tools to see if that helps:

Hi @maykato, thank you for your response.

Yes, all plugins, themes and site core are up-to-date.
Please note that those plugins that see loading the dashboard fail, only do so when combined with WooCommerce and furthermore please note the TTL issue of c30 seconds with WooCommerce enabled; all plugins enabled and WooCommerce disabled returns normal function of the dashboard in this build.

With WooCommerce transients cleared, the test cycled successfully and dashboard again failed to load (all plugins enabled).

Checking the WooCommerce log gave me this, however:

The shipping zone in place on this dev environment has c133,000 post-codes, removing these fixes all issues.
With WooCommerce (and all other plugins) enabled, dashboard is once again loading within 1 second.

Fixed. If there is anyone reading this in the future, don’t have such colossal shipping rules in place.
