What you think is right on. Converting anything from non-responsive to responsive is a pretty big job. When I’ve done it it’s taken anywhere from a day to 2 weeks depending on just how complex the site is (and of course how much time I could spend on it each day).
This is something that you’ll need to figure out for yourself. is it worth doing this for your existing theme, or are you better off changing to a theme that’s responsive out of the box? Both are possible, and both work, but they will have different outcomes.
When you make your site responsive it could also make it heavy, which means slow page loading. Be careful as Google now take into account page speed in its ranking and slow loading in general means you will lose traffic. Less than 3 seconds loading time is good.

Thanks for the replies.
How about using a theme switcher like this: https://wordpress.org/plugins/device-theme-switcher/?
Have you guys tried something like this? This looks promising as I can only build a new theme for mobile and tablet devices and leave the current theme as is. What are your thoughts?
I haven’t used it, but if it works it would be OK.
