    Hello,
I’ve been using FrontPage 2002 on an old computer for many years, uploading updated files via FTP to my website. Will no longer be able to run FP on a new computer as it was preloaded onto the old computer, and I wasn’t supplied with the installation files. The website setup is very simple, html and graphic files – no special FP “hover buttons” etc.
Would like to rebuild the website (folders and files) in WordPress. WordPress is available on my web host’s server,so I assume I would rebuild the site there, and not on my computer. What do I need to do to make sure the pages built in FP on my computer, plus links between pages, can be copied correctly to WordPress?
    Thanks,
    Roger

  • You will be using the old local FrontPage website as a source of entries that you copy/paste into your new WordPress site. You will be able to use much of your copy and images, organise your menus etc.

Ok, I have been reading on how to convert FP pages into WP. Now my question that I cannot find answered is the following:

i have a secure SSL order form that when someone purchases a product and hits the SUBMIT (ORDER) button it generates a email to me so I can process the order.

Will WP allow me to keep that function when the FP pages are converted?

    Hi RMS1,
Much like you, I’ve been using the old and outdated FrontPage 2002 to create all of my web pages for my main site at: http://teejayenterprises.net. I’ve just gotten into WP for the first time and I’m at a loss as to how to create my pages in WP. Can I just create a page in my FP 2002 and just copy it into WP without any problems ??

And I also noticed the post from Spudgun where he said he was reading how to convert FP pages into WP. Where did you find that info because I REALLY need to read that stuff??

Thanks in advance for any & all responses.

I found info by googling wordpress.

It is still a little confusing. I also ran a add on craigslist for doing the conversions because I am too old to reinvent the wheel.

    So far I go over 50 responses….

    Apologies for the long response.

In answer to questions – I have not transferred my FP site to WP. I am still updating web pages via FP on my computer, and FTP-ing them to the internet site. This means I haven’t encountered any issues.

The only reason I considered WP was if I bought a new computer. FP 2002 was already loaded on the old computer when I bought it, but as I don’t have the installation files, I would need an alternative program.

Like Spudgun I can’t be bothered reinventing the wheel – unless there is no alternative. I’m still using the old computer. When/if I move to a new computer, I ought to be able to plug in and use the old computer to update and FTP the FP pages, or even copy and paste them to a new computer, and FTP them from there. I know it sounds awkward, but it can be done in minutes for each update, and will save hours of set up, transferring to WP and solving all inevitable problems.

Should the old computer break down, I will already have copies of all FP web pages on the new computer (and on the net). These pages are very simple – no bells and whistles. If necessary, in a new computer I can make changes and do updates via HTML code, and test them locally in a web browser.

Anyway, at the moment that’s the theory and the plan… And there’s probably a “WP for Dummies” book around, should I eventually need it.

    Hi Roger & Spudgun,
Thanks for the prompt responses and no need for any apologies. Like I said earlier, I’m brand spanking new to WP and I’m at a total loss right now because I’m trying to set up a paid membership site on WP and I have no idea on how to create the pages in WP so that they look like what I want. I’m thinking of creating the pages in FP and just copying and pasting them into WP. Is that possible? and will the page show up in WP with all of the images and links working properly?

And Roger, I still have the original installation disc for the FP 2002 program and if you would like to borrow that disc to install FP on your new computer, I’ll gladly let you borrow the disc if you promise to send it back to me.

Thanks again for the prompt responses from both of you.

Probably won’t work very well because of the way WP works and the way themes are generally set up – i.e. the HTML structure and CSS from FP won’t necessarily transfer to WP via copy/paste.

BTW, just a general comment – aside from WP, FP code is by now quite outdated, so you may also run into compatibility issues with browsers. In the long run, you’ll be much better off spending some time learning how WP works. I know that sounds like a lot of (sometimes frustrating and time-consuming) work, but I think you’ll find a much better result than trying to make FP do something it’s not designed to do.

I am copy and paste into Dreamweaver. Since my web server does not support FP extensions (things that make the submit, counter, etc work) I am hoping that the server will support FTP protocol. HTML is HTML and so far it looks like Dream weaver will except and display my FP pages just like they did before. Now I gotta see if I can get the other functions working.

I did have one programer send me a copy of what my home page would look like in WP. My hyperlinks were on top of the text and not to the side.

I also have our club’s website on 1&1 web page. I can make it work on there format (not sure what it is maybe WP?)but you cant just copy/paste your text, and pictures easily, and downloads need to be in PDF files.

In response to further postings… I don’t think I’ll have any problems with FP pages not working in newer browsers, as I don’t use FP extensions. But, if or when it happens, especially on the most popular browsers, I’ll make a change.

Re Dreamweaver, yes, have heard it will handle importation of FP webs. But it’s expensive, which is why I first asked about WP.

Thanks, TimG211, for your offer – may take it up, if necessary, down the track, when I get around to buying that new computer! However, am in Australia, if that is relevant to posting disks overseas.
