• Hi,

Josh Lobe here. Developer of the Ultimate Tinymce plugin for WordPress.

I am working on a new interface for the content editor which mimics the Microsoft Word editor. It is not identical… by heavy Microsoft Word users should definitely see some similarities.

Here is a link running the demo:

I’m wondering how this would be accepted into the WordPress community. If anyone cares to take a few moments, I would certainly appreciate some feedback and constructive criticism.

    Thanks!!

  • Just whether Microsoft has trademark, patents or copyrights on the “look” and “Word” that might be relevant – I dunno, but probably worth looking into it a bit. (Ugh…)

Debian, Open Office and other look-alikes do not seem to have a problem there, but I have no idea what the details might be.

I would go for option 1 because I’d want to be the owner of the most downloaded plugin on WordPress.

That sounds about right to me, and I am sure I am not the only one who tries to help make sure the authors of free plugins and others can afford all the coffee they can drink.

    Keep us posted. Looks good.

but I have no idea what the details might be.

Some detail here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/intellectualproperty/Trademarks/EN-US.aspx , but I can only find information regarding logos.

What, you think ‘ole Bill would want to hinder a competitors progress??

Ha Ha – nah, he’s now become a philanthropist!

Maybe I’m just too cynical…but IP lawyers are pretty aggressive (not to mention rich) – and it’d be horrible to run into a mess down the road.

Man… thanks for the research, guys!!

Yeah, I don’t think I would be violating based on it’s “appearance”. I mean, we see “generics” all the time… mimicking the original. As long as I don’t use any registered trademarks or logos… I think it will be okay.

This is how we make advancements, right? πŸ˜‰

    @josh,
Leave everything like intellectual property rights, trademarks and patent rights issues to me. I will take care of bill and others. My services are also open source. I have been a lawyer for a few years. I left the trade only when my clients understood their follies. Anyway, let me hunt down my old moth-eaten law books. Book me now, unless you want to allow the millions wash down the drain.

    Hi Krishna,

I am quite familiar with corporate law regarding patents and trademarks myself… but only because of a few ventures my father was involved.

I’m sure you know way more.. and have much more experience than I. I’m just saying I’m not completely “green” πŸ™‚

Please feel free to use my contact form to send me a message.. and we can continue via email.

    Thank you!!

Just be sure to stop a bit short of having your stuff installed on the computer assembly line…and maybe we will have gone as far as we need to go anyway!

Its true of my old trade, but I was just joking. Any way, I will keep touch and we can exchange views.

Lol.. I know, right?!! It’s a VERY fine line!

Well.. I have a little more work to do on it.. but I certainly appreciate everyones feedback and time! It is moments like this that truly define “community”!

    I’ll be back soon πŸ™‚

Will the plugin deal with the general problems of copying and pasting Microsoft Word’s formatting into WordPress? You know, those formatting issues people get?

    Not currently.

However, this is also on our “project table”. We have already included a new button for uploading a word doc. We are going to take either the .pdf or the .html version.. and run it through our own conversion scripts before inserting the output into the content editor.

The output will still have some “problem areas”… but hopefully it will be much better than what’s currently available in core.

    Hi Josh, how are you?

I was just curious as to how this project has progressed. I checked the demo site and can’t see the editor anymore as I remember it.

I did notice how the “Ribbon” skin for TinyMCE has been released: http://tinymce.swis.nl/ – Is this related to you?
