    Hello,
I’m working on a new project and the client is wanting to improve their search engine that is intended to look up keywords in pdf, office, and text documents, but the current plugin is not doing the work. I’ve heard of Jetpack and noticed it has a search function. I also noticed that css-tricks.com uses jetpack in their search engine. For my project, I would need a search engine to look up the keywords in documents in the database. Is this something that Jetpack can handle?

To clarify: I’m not looking for a global search engine, I’m looking for a search engine that can work for specific database tables, in this case, documents, but could also need a products search in the future.

I would love to get on the phone with anyone that has this experience and could really sell me on this product.

    Thanks,
    Jorge

  • Hi @jrgptrgvnn

Thanks for your interest in Jetpack Search.

I can see that you are asking whether Jetpack Search can look up into pdf and different files that are uploaded/stored on a site. Jetpack itself doesn’t support that specifically; however, custom post types are supported, so if there’s a way to make those documents into a custom post type, it may be possible to include them in the search function/filters.

If you plan to use WooCommerce in the future, Product search is also available with Jetpack Search.

We don’t offer support or sales services through the phone, but I encourage you to reach out to us here if you have any questions.

    Hi @muffinpeace

I just found out that the posts are all in the media section. Is this what you mean by “ however, custom post types are supported, so if there’s a way to make those documents into a custom post type, it may be possible to include them in the search function/filters.”

    Thanks,
    Jorge

    Hello @jrgptrgvnn,

If the content is in the Media section and is published on the website (even on a hidden page), then Jetpack Search might be able to index and report it in the search results. The Custom Post Type mentioned by Mehdi is a great way to make such documents (dox, PDF etc) easily available as a post on your site.

Anything that is published and publicly available can be searched by our Search product.

Does it answer your question? 🙂

@erania-pinnera Thank you for your response!

Will it be able to search keywords within pdf documents?

    Hi @jrgptrgvnn

No, it can’t search within PDF documents, the document content would need to be extracted and converted to a post on your site, so that the text could be searched directly within the database (not within a file).
