• Over the last few months, our site has been descending into being hardly useable because we so often get a “Connection lost” error message on the back end right above the post, which means we cannot save / upload / do much of anything — and then also a server error message often on the front end. Eventually, the site starts running fine again — it comes and goes, but it’s becoming more and more frequent. We’re fully up to date on WP, we have not added any plugins (the site worked perfectly fine before, so it doesn’t seem like that’s a logical culprit), and it’s just making it incredibly difficult to run the site.

I suspect this may be a problem with our server / host, but I wanted to put the question out here as well to see if it is possibly a problem with WordPress? What can we do? We’re considering shifting our site to a new host, but I want to exhaust all options first.

    Here is the site.

i think you may be right about the server but i’d also suggest troubleshooting your internet connection too, just in case there’s a problem there. lost connection in the browser when creating posts and pages can sometimes be that.

as for frontend error that’s probably a server things so contact your host and see what they have to say…

Thank you! It is definitely not an internet issue — the problem happens for various users at many different locations (office, home, coffee shop).

I’ve put in a call to action with the server, and we’ll see what happens. I just want to know if there is any chance this could be a WordPress issue? Is there anything I could try?

just to be sure can you list the version of wp, the plugins (both active and deactivated) and your theme?

you’ve said you’re up to date but there may be something lurking about that’s causing the problem…

some bad news, not everything is up to date:

-Advance WP Query Search Filter last updated march compatible up to 3.5.2
-Batch Categories is apparently no longer supported and the latest references i can find to it date back to early last year
-Custom TinyMCE Shortcode Button hasn’t been updated for a year
-Easy Columns hasn’t been updated for nearly 7 months
-Hupso Share Buttons for Twitter, Facebook & Google+ hasn’t been updated for nearly 6 months
-Lightbox Gallery hasn’t been updated in nearly 2 years
-Posts By Tag hasn’t been updated in nearly 6 months
-Share Drafts Publicly hasn’t been updated in a year and a half
-Thumbnail Gallery (WordPress Plugin) hasn’t been updated in nearly 7 months
-WooSidebars hasn’t been updated for 15 months
-WP Editor not updated for about 6 months
-WP Equal Columns hasn’t been update in 5 and a half years!
-Youtube Channel Gallery hasn’t been updated for 8 months
    – Inline Preview for 7 months

all of your plugins have to load files and make external calls to operate, including the deactivated ones, so with that many plugins active and that many that are not up to date with wordpress 4.0.1 (especially WP-Equal Columns, get that out of your system now!), that could explain a lot!

any plugin that doesn’t explicitly state that it’s compatible with the current version of wordpress should be treated with some skepticism and anything that hasn’t been updated for more than a couple of months spanning the latest wordpress update should also be viewed badly. the older and more incompatible they are with wordpress the more demands they make trying to load out of date files, calling out to resources that may no longer exist, taking up database traffic and space which can slow your site and creating a massive hole in your site’s security.

definitely get rid of that equal columns plugin. 🙂
