Two of eight images on the homepage of a client site disappeared, instead only showing the drop shadow where they should be and the background color.

First I tried re-inserting the same images via customizer and it made no difference. Then I tried inserting new images and it made no difference.

As suggested in another post, I disabled Mesmerize Companion and that completely broke the site design, returning a 404 page not found error when trying to view the frontend.

Next I started troubleshooting possible plugin conflicts (the site is only running 13 plugins most of which are for security / optimization). When I disabled Autoptimize the site displayed all images correctly again.

  • First and foremost try to identify what is breaking things by just disabling CSS or JS or HTML or Image optimization (incl. lazyload). Based on that we can see what the next steps should be.

Thanks for your quick response! I went through and individually disabled each setting and then saved changes and empty cache each time.

It appears to be the very last setting on the main page: Also optimize for logged in editors/ administrators? By default Autoptimize is also active for logged on editors/ administrators, uncheck this option if you don’t want Autoptimize to optimize when logged in e.g. to use a pagebuilder.

With all other settings the way that I previously had them configured and the last setting unchecked, the site displays properly.

To verify I toggled that setting a couple times and reviewed the site. That setting is the culprit.

but does your site in that case work OK for non-logged in visitors? maybe test in a separate browser/ private window?

Yes it works. I staged the site and was reviewing it live. As soon as I disabled that one setting everything works great again. I’ve already updated the live site. Thanks for your help!

    you’re welcome 🙂
