• I wish I could come up with a more descriptive title than that, but I can’t. I was using WordPress 2.0 on http://horrorsnotdead.com/wpress when today I experienced a complete breakdown in function. I had just finished deleting a pingback to one of my own entries via the default admin CP and was proceeding to change one small thing in the WPress options, I clicked to confirm the changed option (I changed the website url, not blog url, location from horrorsnotdead.com/wpress to just horrorsnotdead.com) and without seeing a confirmation page the 404s started to come.

Each one was some variation of this:
The requested URL /wp-login.php?redirect_to=%2Fwpress%2Fwp-admin%2F does not exist.

The Control Panel still looked the same, but anything I clicked brought up a corresponding 404 error. The blog itself also looked radically different from its template, without me ever altering anything in the template or any files other than the aforementioned deleted pingback.

I can no longer access the Control Panel in any capacity. I upgraded from 2.0 to 2.1 following the excellent instructions linked to in the sticky with the hope of a fix, but noticed absolutely no change whatsoever.

Does anyone have any idea as to what happened? I’m not at all fluent with wordpress so I have no clue how to fix this. Any suggestions at all would be appreciated.

  • The URL change did it.

Follow this and change BOTH values to be the same as they were:
    http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/site-url/

then if you want to alter things, post back and we’ll whizz though it.

    It’s all very curable 🙂

Ahhh, thank you very, very much. I had a feeling that was what caused it, but I didn’t know the first clue as to how to fix it.

    Again, thanks a ton.

Actually, just another, very minor problem. Doesn’t deserve a thread dedicated to it on its own, but I figured I’d throw it out there in case someone knew the cause. If you go to

    http://horrorsnotdead.com/wpress/2006/02/06/nightbreed/

You’ll notice that the sidebar is pushed below the post’s content. I’ve had this happen occasionally and usually just change whatever the last thing I edited about the post and it goes back to normal, but no such luck this time. Any ideas?
