Compact view in Next Gen Gallery

My site has an extensive gallery which I’m using the Next Gen Gallery plug in to display but try as I might I can’t get my albums to display horizontally like in flickr. They all display one after another vertically to the left of the page and it doesn’t look great.

How do I change this? I know the answer is compact view but I can’t seem to get it to work.
All the albums are in one main album which has it’s own page where I have selected compact view but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. I’ve googled and seen lots of people asking this question but couldn’t find any solutions.
