• For some reason, I am noticing that all my posts older than a month or so are automatically closing comments. I looked in the settings, and I have nothing checked to close old comments. I have no plugins that are set to do that-I have the following plugins in use:

    Akismet 2.1.8
    Comment Referrers 0.1
    Post Revisions 0.1
    Snap Preview AnywhereTM Plugin 1.0
    StatPress 1.2.9.2
    Subscribe To Comments 2.1.2
    WordPress.com Stats 1.3.2
    WordPress Database Backup 1.7
    WP-Amazon 2.0 Beta 1.1
    WP-phpMyAdmin 2.10.3

I see no settings in Akismet to close old comments automatically, nor anything in comment referrers or subscribe to comments, and it wouldn’t really make much sense for them to have those functions I don’t think.

I can’t figure out where to start looking to check to make sure no code or plugin is causing this to happen. I found a code to use in phpMyAdmin to globally open all comments in all posts, but for some reason I’m getting an error that won’t even allow me to use phpMyAdmin right now.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Any idea where to start investigating? I’m not all that good with code or changing php/sql settings, knowing what blocks of code means, etc. It’s been a while since I’ve made any changes at that level, so I forget much of it…

I was able to test and go into several old posts that automatically closed comments and reopen them by choosing “allow comments” and “allow pings”…if you go to the posts where they closed by themselves, the box next to “allow comments” is unchecked.

  • There is definitely a plugin that closes comments on older posts but I am not sure if it is one in your list.Askimet has no settings beside api key.
Have you tried deactivating all plugins to see if that opens comments?
I’m sure you must have, just a suggestion.

Yeah, I deactivated all of them, but then I thought that mightnot even show me much of anything…because I’d have to deactivate them and then wait a month to see if they continued to automatically close, no? Deactivating them and somehow deactivating whatever closed them wouldn’t necessarily reopen the old ones, so I can’t imagine that would even tell me much of anything. I think that makes sense…

I saw there were actually a few plugins to close old comments, but I’ve never had any of them uploaded, let alone in use.

Like I said, I was trying to run phpMyAdmin (with that error) to globally open ALL closed comment posts, but even then, whatever is causing it could just as easily reclose them all a week from now.

I have the same problem on SciencePunk.com – old posts are not allowing comments. (All comments were blocked when I upgraded to WP 2.6.2, this was because the upgrade reset my Discussion preferences.)

Any idea what is causing this? Here are the plugins I’m running:
    Askimet
    FLV Embed
    Google Sitemaps
    Header Image Rotator
    Kimli FLash Embed
    Meta tag generator
    Most Commented
    Recent Comments
    Subscribe2
    Vipers Video Quick Tags
    Wordpress Database Backup

I’m going to try 2.6.3 but any help would be appreciated.

A quick addition – I can go back through old posts manually and reset them to allow comments, but with 450+ entries I’d rather not have to…

This same thing has been happening to me for the past year. On my site, it doesn’t happen just when I upgrade. I agree with Frank. Updating 300+ posts on my blog 15 at a time is very time consuming.

Here are some common plugins that frank, jboze and I all have: Askimet and subscribe to comments for jboze and I. Not sure if they are connected.

I could sure use some expertise on this.

    Thanks
