comment form on frontpage

I would like to have the comment template right on the homepage below a featured article. For this I opened single.php and copied <?php comments_template(); ?> and pasted it to where I want it to appear on the homepage. But for some reason nothing happens! Do I have to change anything in the actual comments.php to make it work or where is the mistake?
