• With over 570k media files, managing them can be a chore, but they were all working fine, until I decided to offload all media to Cloudflare R2. I used the Advanced Media Offloader (AMO) plugin. Now, I’m missing a variety of thumbnails, and there isn’t any consistency regarding size or anything else I can determine for those that fail. I’ve been arguing with this for a couple of weeks, and I have not noticed any errors.

Post, page, and product image thumbnails have disappeared. Some will regenerate, and others will not. Combine that with R2, and I’m not seeing an efficient way to fix this.

    • All images were offloaded using WP CLI ‘wp advmo offload’. It took a few days to complete.
    • When I noticed images were missing, I used WPI CLI again, ‘wp media regenerate –yes’. This worked for some, but not all, and it ran for more than 4 days.
    • Next, I ran ‘wp media regenerate –only-missing –yes’. Still missing images once that process claimed to be complete.
    • I then attempted manual, individual regeneration through the plugin, which sometimes works and sometimes does not. However, there is a new surprise, where the plugin process changes from green check marks to all red Xs. Even with the red Xs, it fixes ‘some’ of the thumbnails (see screenshots at link below).
    • Then, I disabled the Advanced Media Offloader plugin and ran the full ‘wp media regenerate — yes’ command again, thinking running the command with AMO active might cause a partial conflict. Then, once complete, I re-enabled AOM and ran the WP CLI ‘wp advmo offload’ command again. Thousands of missing thumbnails remain.

Here are some screenshot examples. You will see the empty thumbnail(s) in the media library. I open that image and it is visible, and then click regenerate thumbnails. The green check marks turn to all red Xs. The media thumbnail remains missing after regeneration.

*** Condolences to Alex’s family. I only found out about his passing when searching to see if others experienced similar issues and read about the loss on the plugin’s home page. Cancer Sucks!
