How many have you allowed in the admin > settings?
Thanks Tara! my second question would be, how would you specify how many rows there are for example: I have 8 posts, normally it would be 5 per row. Can I even it out by putting four on top and four in the bottom, instead of 5 on top and 3 in the bottom?

In the dashboard go to Tools->Reading and change the number next to the “Blog pages show at most” text. This should control how many circles appear on your homepage.
