• Hey all, someone PLEASE help me figure this out!

I need to change the permissions in my wp-uploads or wp-content folder to address an issue i’m having with an error i get when i try to backup my wordpress. I get the error “Could not create directory. /public_html”.

I use ClassicFTP on a Mac OS, and do not see anywhere in the program to do this. The technical support for the FTP software said I need to change the permissions on the files located on my harddrive and then upload that file to the server. However, I was under the assumption that the wp-content and upload folders are created and housed on the FTP server and are not on my computer. Does anyone know?

Baby steps please!!! 🙂 Thanks so much in advance

  • most ftp clients – you connect to web host server
    right click on folder/file
    permissions should be an option

I have only ever used Filezilla ftp where this is an easy option

thanks for responding sam. I do not have that option when i right click.

Like i said I contacted the technical support for ClassicFTP for Mac and they said that i need to change the permissions of the files on my computer then upload to the server. But i didn’t think the folders i need to change are on my harddrive, just housed on the server..

So I guess my main question is does anyone know if the wp-uploads, wp-content, etc folders are housed on your computer?? I thought these were created as temporary or permanant web folders housed only on the FTP server!!!

Also if i changed FTP servers, do you know if i will encounter problems with my website?? And do you know if filezilla will work for a mac?

    thanks again

there is a mac download for filezilla – look at my link

there won’t be any files/folders of wp on your computer unless you put them there – permissions are always changed on host’s server
you cannot change permissions on local (your computer) files only on web host
