  • My permalink urls are set up with this option:

    http://example.com/?p=123

Would like to specify a custom permalink url for a particular page.

    http://example.com/custompagename

WP doesn’t give me an Edit button for the permalink, even after I’ve published the page.

This is also true with posts (though I’ve only tried private publishing for these).

Is there any way to do this?

I don’t want to change my permalink structure because lots of links will break.

    Much appreciated, thanks.

You need to set up “pretty permalinks” in order to have custom “slugs” like “custompagename” instead of the default “?p=123”

All about permalinks and pretty permalinks:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks

    The short strokes:

    1) Go into Settings > Permalinks

    2) Choose your pretty permalink structure

After those steps, depending on your server setup, either your server will automatically update your .haccess file for you to enable pretty permalinks, or you may need to manually create and/or edit your .htaccess file. Instructions for doing that are on the above Codex page.

Once your pretty permalinks have been set up, you’ll be able to edit the page “slug” for each page and post to whatever you want.

    p.s.

I don’t want to change my permalink structure because lots of links will break.

Even after setting up pretty permalinks, your old “ugly” links will still work, so there shouldn’t be any broken links.

    Thanks zoonini!
