You can change the css for the editor or use a plugin like http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tinymce-advanced/
if you only want font-size option instead of all tinyMCE advanced features, you can install plugin I just worte. maybe you find it useful
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-editor-fontsize/
I already have tinyMCE advanced activated. I can’t find an option to change the appearance of type in the editor itself. Am I missing something?

I recommend asking in this plugin’s dedicated support sub-forum for better results so its developers and users can help you with this:

I’m not sure I was clear enough in my initial post. I am not wanting to change the type size on the web page as it displays. I only want the text that appears within the editor window itself to be big enough that I can see it and work with it. It is much smaller than the text that displays on the front end, and it is smaller than it used to be.

Thanks for all your suggestions, Tara. I looked at this plugin but it appears to work only in the HTML text editing area. That one is not a problem for me – it’s the Visual (WYSIWYG) editor.
