Sure, that can be done by modifying a template file with a child theme. I went ahead put one together for you. You can download it here:
Download Tracks Child theme
Here are the steps for activating the child theme:
- Visit your site’s dashboard
- Go to the Appearance menu
- Click on the “Add New” button at the top of the page
- Click on the “Upload Theme” button at the top of the page
- Click on the “Choose File” button
- Select the tracks-child.zip file you downloaded from this email
- Click “Install Now”
- Once the page reloads, click the blue “activate” link
Don’t be alarmed if the site looks different with the child theme active. Some of the Customizer settings might need to be copied over, but they are not lost. You can use the Customizer Export/Import plugin to quickly copy your settings from the Tracks theme to the Tracks Child theme if necessary.
That makes me a tad nervous.
So..
1. While I still have Tracks activated, I use Customizer Export to export my settings.
2. Activate Tracks Child and then import the exported file to retrieve old settings/options? What about custom CSS?
Can I always revert back to my Tracks theme without losing anything? Or does making changes in a different Theme affect all uploaded Themes?
Yea let me clear things up.
All of your settings including the Custom CSS are tied to the Tracks theme. You can always reactivate the Tracks theme, and nothing will be lost.
When you activate the Tracks child theme, even though it is built off of Tracks, WordPress will view it as a separate theme and so it won’t use the settings from Tracks. Those settings aren’t lost, they are just connected to Tracks instead of the Tracks child theme.
Instead of having to reselect your options or copy and paste CSS from Tracks to the child theme, the Customizer Import/Export plugin will let you download a file that has all the settings and import them once the child theme is active. This makes the process quicker and easier.
