Change registration process

I was wondering if there was some way to simplify the registration process. For that matter make it not go to the default wordpress page, which obviously looks nothing like 99% of blogs.

I’d like the registration to be simple and not include an email confirmation or at least not send a random password that needs to be changed. If anyone can tell me how I might go about this I would really appreciate it.
