Category Filter Plugin

I am looking for a plugin that I can put on my homepage that will allow me to filter my posts by categories and possibly by date. I have used the sidebar widget, but the problem is, my website is designed to list upcoming events in my city and the posts need to be listed with soonest events first, instead of most recent post first.

So what I need is:
1) A plugin that I can insert on my page
2) That will have a way to filter events (possibly a drop down menu) by category (and maybe date and other things)

Any ideas?
