Category confusion

I am creating categories but in every other situation where they appear, I see only one: “uncategorized” – they are not appearing.

Also, when I create a post, I see no way to select a category for the post.

When viewing the site, “no categories” appears.

I seem to be creating them but they are not active or something?

On the category panel there are checkboxes but no actions like “activate.”

I don’t really get what is going on, am I missing something?
