I’ve always used this setting to control the input and size of the captcha response field: [captchar captcha-720 6/]

However, in a new installation, the field is as wide as the Name, Email, and Subject fields.

Your theme’s stylesheet has this style rule.

The width: 60% is applied to the captcha response field.

Thanks for the explanation, Takayuki. I’ll keep it in mind if I decide it is worthwhile making a child theme.
