Cant upload images in WP

I was using my site as normal and went to upload a picture when I got the /wp-content/uploads. Is its parent directory writable by the server error message. I just got this error on both of my sites running wp 2.7. All permissions were changed to 777 but still no luck. I was able to upload fine for over a year now and all of a sudden this popped up.
