Cant update or back-up anything

Hi all,
I’m hoping somebody has some insight to this issue. I took over the WP site and have never been able to back it up or update the plug-ins. I figured it was due to low space on the server. I had the hosting company bump up the plan and there should now be plenty of room.

First issue: I cannot see a way to check how much server space the WP site has been allocated. Everything online says to check the media section but that seems to be for wp.com not .org. So even though I have server space, I’m not sure how much is actually available.

Second issue: I have never been able to successfully back up this site or update the plugins. When I attempt to update plug-in I get this…..
Update Failed: Could not create directory.

whenever I try to back up the site using UpDraft or duplicator I get errors. message: “The backup attempt has finished, apparently unsuccessfully”
