    Hi there,

I made an Updraft backup of a WordPress installation I had on a subfolder and then deleted that installation to free up space on my hosting account. I had also made a different backup with cpanel meant to migrate this install to another server but that backup seems broken (it’s a tar.gz file).

Then I re-installed WordPress on the same subfolder and attemped to restore the Updraft backup but it restored only partially, and when the option appeared to continue the process I kept getting a 404 error and could not complete it.

Does that mean this backup is broken too? It was not a migration because I uploaded to the same folder. Thought about purchasing the migrator add-on to restore the files directly on the new server, but if the backup is broken I’m guessing that wouldn’t work.

I read about manual restoring on your site but I don’t have the database password so I’m not sure I could try this option. I do have a separate database backup though.

Can you help? Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

To test if your UpdraftPlus is broken/corrupted you can try to unzip the file. If you can unzip the files okay then the backups are not corrupted. It is possible that the corruption of files happened during upload.

Alternatively, you can manually restore your site. Please see this guide – https://updraftplus.com/faqs/i-want-to-restore-but-have-either-cannot-or-have-failed-to-do-so-from-the-wp-admin-console/

    Best Wishes,

Hi, thank you. I can unzip the files just fine.

I read the guide, is the manual restore possible if I don’t have the database password?

    Thanks again

    Hi,

    Apologies for the late reply.

    “database password?”
    > Is your database encrypted? If yes, see how to decrypt using this guide – https://updraftplus.com/faqs/i-encrypted-my-database-how-do-i-decrypt-it/

If there are no encryption then you should be able to restore the database as described in our restoration guide.

I read somewhere about a manual installation without installing WordPress first, and it required the database user and password. I thought it was on one of your guides but it was probably somewhere else.

Managed to restore the tar.gz file to the new server though. Thank you for your help!
