Can you assign them individually ?
Not suggesting this as a solution, but as part of fault finding !
Thanks for your reply. Sorry to say I can’t assign them individually either. In fact I don’t have the option to do them individually hence using the bulk change.
so if you go into
dashboard>users>all users and edit a user you should see the private groups options near the end.
Can you tell me if you see these?
I can’t edit individual users. I only have the option to remove them. But I also don’t have any private groups options on my own profile.

Which would probably explain it.
I presume you do not have admin privileges? And that someone else does?
Since changing private groups comes under ‘editing users’ then if you don’t have the privilege to edit, you won’t be able to assign or change their private groups
